1. Building Management System (BMS): The central platform monitoring and controlling all major building systems — HVAC, electrical distribution, lighting, elevators, fire alarm integration, and access control. Major platforms: Siemens Desigo CC, Honeywell EBI, Schneider EcoStruxure Building, Johnson Controls Metasys.

2. Energy Management System (EMS): Focused specifically on electrical energy — real-time power consumption monitoring, power quality analysis (harmonics, power factor, voltage unbalance), peak demand management, and renewable energy integration.

In the UAE, energy management is increasingly mandated under Estidama (Abu Dhabi) and Dubai’s Green Building Regulations (DGBR).

3. Smart Lighting Control: Beyond basic switching — daylight harvesting, occupancy-based control, scene control, and circadian lighting. Key protocols: DALI-2 (digital addressable lighting interface), KNX, Casambi (wireless).

4. IoT Sensors and Edge Devices: Occupancy sensors, CO2 monitors, smart electricity meters at sub-panel level, leak detection sensors, vibration monitors on critical HVAC equipment. These sensors typically communicate over Zigbee, LoRa, MQTT, or BACnet/IP.

5. Smart Distribution and Power Monitoring: Smart circuit breakers with remote trip capability, power meters on each feeder, automatic fault detection and BMS notification, integration with the EMS for load trend analysis.

The benchmark: An electrical engineer working on smart building projects should be able to explain the function and integration point of each of these five systems — not configure them all, but understand how they connect.


The Protocols That Connect Everything

The benchmark: An electrical engineer who can specify the correct BACnet interface, Modbus register map, and DALI addressing for a smart building project is a systems integrator — and commands a corresponding premium.
